DRUMKIDS DRUM CLINIC FOR ALL LEARNERS & SPECIALIZED LEARNERS
Through super simple, online percussion instruction [no drums required], Dr. Sasha will work to equip your learner with strategies, structures, and systems meant to offer support as they begin their musical journey.
KIDS LOVE DRUMMING. These simple drum sessions feature the basics of drumming and drum patterning. Through drumming, learners can practice skills that may help regulate or soothe certain behaviors which, in the long run, could improve executive functioning skills and help to reduce behavioral referrals and other external issues. Not convert behaviors. Not mask behaviors. Only soothe, self-regulate, and practice.
And for our nontraditional learners or our kids who are better served with that extra bit of attention, Dr. Sasha and ThisBrownTeacher.com shares methods meant to help learners improve their executive functioning skills, practice their social interactions, and work to monitor and manage their own behaviors, reactions, and responses in order to successfully navigate a world that sometimes seems too big and too much.
Drumming is a naturalistic, evidence-based, music-centered intervention that gives all kids, particularly neurodiverse thinkers or unique personalities alternatives to certain atypical behaviors and emotions.
And the best part is that learners do not need drums to participate. Learners may work with drumsticks alone or even with only their fingers. When working with all learners including young children, students who do not speak English as their first language, or nontraditional or atypical thinkers and learners, REPETITION is key. And an advantage of drumming lies within the patterns we will learn. Why? Because drum patterns offer repetitive movements that learners can implement whenever they are feeling stressed, bored, overstimulated, agitated, anxious, and more.
Scientific studies have analyzed music, synchronization, and the electrical activity in the brain, and what they’ve found is that music has the ability to soothe, align, and redirect. A student quietly tapping a drum pattern to themselves or even working collectively in a group setting serves as a form of self-regulation and helps the learner facilitate greater autonomy and an improved sense of control.
Unlike other ‘kids drum lessons’, working to enhance the whole child is the goal of ThisBrownTeacher and the DrumKids Drum Clinic. The simple steps, patterns, and strategies learners practice with Dr. Sasha can then be transferred and used in real-world situations and environments. This transfer of skills and knowledge can help any learner feel rebalanced, help reduce anxiety, or promote synchronicity when learners are feeling out of synch.
So much more than a generalized music class or online drum lesson for kids, DrumKids Drum Clinic sessions are learner-specific, moderately-paced, individualized sessions designed to use music-forward, evidence-based practices to give both traditional and nontraditional learners the space to practice and utilize techniques and tactics meant to optimize and enhance not only executive functioning but other social skills … all through the craft of drum movements and patterning.
Remember, these beginner to intermediate sessions bring way more to the table than just “how to” methodologies on how children could learn to play drums. Because each session focuses on social skill building rather than rote drum playing, all learners are sure to gain specific, measurable gains from these lessons that can be transferred to real-world social scenarios. And actual drums -or even noise- are not even required.
How perfect is that?

The Benefits for Neurodiverse Learners are Invaluable!
Drumming is a naturalistic, evidence-based, music-centered intervention that gives all learners -particularly NEURODIVERGENT THINKERS or high-functioning, nontraditional learners- behavioral alternatives meant to help children self-regulate in an effort to promote an improved sense of control, greater feelings of purpose, and enhanced autonomy, and authority.
DrumKids' basic drumming instruction and informal check-ins are all structured to provide children with options that they can utilize in order to reduce anxiety, rebalance their emotional elevation, or promote synchronicity when feeling overwhelmed or out-of-synch.

SMALL GROUP SOCIALIZATION - DRUM CLINIC
Whether your learner is homeschooled, introverted, prefers their own company, or simply is not here for all the small talk; one question parents of unique learners hear a lot deals with this supposedly “awesome” socialization that is supposedly occurring (apparently) everywhere else that your learner is supposedly missing out on..
And sure, socialization is important. But we are the ones who know our kid the best. And we know what makes them most comfortable. Or we know our schedules and know that group activities organized by others (school groups, community groups, whatever) just don’t work for us at this time.
No explanation necessary.
Facilitated by Dr. Sasha and offering the same evidence-based supports as our weekday Literacy and Music Instruction, Saturday Small Group provides learners with the opportunity to connect and collaborate with their (age-appropriate) peers in structured, supervised, virtual sessions yet in a more open, inclusive space where learners are given a calm, no pressure space to actually practice interacting with other children in helpful and very healthy ways. And all under the guise of a weekly group book club or weekly group drum session.
Small Group Socialization can also put parents at ease by providing a solution to a concern shared by traditional and home school families alike, which is … “Is my child receiving enough opportunities to properly and appropriately socialize with other children?”
And by the way, Small Group Socialization -scheduled to occur on Saturdays only- Is perfect for all learners including homeschool families looking to pair up with others in their homeschool communities, friends seeking a fun weekend activity they can participate in together, multi-child families, families in search of a simpler -yet still highly effective- reading support system, or parents and guardians seeking some form of small group interactivity for their child and a few moments to just breathe, perhaps, for themselves.

But just in case you don't want to wait, please visit the DRUMKIDS SCHEDULER and select the session DATE and TIME that best works for you.

Absolutely! We hope your child enjoys drumming. We recommend registering for drum sessions on a regular basis. And repurchasing is easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy. Simply purchase the session again HERE. Lessons will be scaffolded for your learner so they learn something new with each session.
Where do I fill out my Enrollment INTAKE Form?
Prior to your child's upcoming drum session, please complete this short INTAKE FORM.
Which sticks should I buy? What drumsticks do you recommend?
While drumsticks are preferred, and will eventually need to be added to your supply list if your little learner finds themselves truly interested in the art of percussion, actual drumsticks are not necessary for their first lesson(s). Nor are drumsticks required if you believe they would pose a problem or be utilized in a non-constructive manner.
That being said, take a look at the DRUMKIDS SUPPLY LIST which includes everything from sticks to snares. Or find out the answers to questions such as: 'What do the numbers on my drumsticks mean"? in Dr. Sasha's blog post HERE.
How long is each drum session?
Classes are LIVE and 25 minutes each. Additional time is not added for late arrivals. Breaks may be incorporated for children who need sessions broken into sections. Full lessons will not extend beyond 25 minutes, breaks included.
Does my child need to show their faces on screen?
Learners must be available and shown LIVE, on-screen during the session. The camera should be placed so that each student's face (and hands in the case of drum sessions) are visible to the instructor.
